One of the methods to add and enrich our Arabic vocabulary is through reading or watching the story. You will find the newest vocabulary. Once you found it, try to know the meaning then you can memorize the meaning and practice making the sentence using the new vocabulary.

Today, I will show you an Arabic short story. The title is going to campus. It tells about Ahmad and his morning activities before going to campus.

إِلَى الجَامِعَةِ

أَحْمَدُ طَالِبٌ نَشِيْطٌ وَذَكِيٌّ فِي الْجَامِعَةِ

يَسْتَيْقِظُ أَحْمَدُ مِنَ النَّوْمِ مُبَكِّرًا 

يَأْخُذُ أَحْمَدُ المِنْشَفَةَ وَالقَمِيْصَ وَالْبَنْطَلُوْنَ فِي الْخِزَانَةِ

ثُمَّ يَغْتَسِلُ بِسُرْعَةٍ فِي الْحَمَّامِ بِالمَاءِ وَالصَّابُوْنِ

أَحْمَدُ مَسْرُورٌ جِدًا لِأَنَّهُ يَلْبَسُ قَمِيْصًا جَدِيْدًا الْيَوْمَ

بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يَذْهَبُ مَعَ أَبِيهِ إِلَى الْجَامِعَةِ بِالسَّيَّارَةِ



The translation of the story in English



أَحْمَدُ طَالِبٌ نَشِيْطٌ وَذَكِيٌّ فِي الْجَامِعَةِ , the meaning is: Ahmad is a diligent and smart student in the campus.


 يَسْتَيْقِظُ أَحْمَدُ مِنَ النَّوْمِ مُبَكِّرًا , the meaning is: Ahmad wakes up early.


يَأْخُذُ أَحْمَدُ المِنْشَفَةَ وَالقَمِيْصَ وَالْبَنْطَلُوْنَ فِي الْخِزَانَةِ , the meaning is: Ahmad takes the towel, the shirt, and the pants from the wardrobe.


ثُمَّ يَغْتَسِلُ بِسُرْعَةٍ فِي الْحَمَّامِ بِالمَاءِ وَالصَّابُوْنِ , the meaning is: Then he takes a bath quickly in the bathroom with water and the soap.


أَحْمَدُ مَسْرُورٌ جِدًا لِأَنَّهُ يَلْبَسُ قَمِيْصًا جَدِيْدًا الْيَوْمَ , the meaning is: Ahmad is very happy because he wears a new shirt today.


 بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يَذْهَبُ مَعَ أَبِيهِ إِلَى الْجَامِعَةِ بِالسَّيَّارَةِ , the meaning is: After that he goes to the campus with his father by the car.



A word by word translation of the story with word's explanation


1. أَحْمَدُ طَالِبٌ نَشِيْطٌ وَذَكِيٌّ فِي الْجَامِعَةِ


a. أَحْمَدُ  : the name of the person.


b. طَالِبٌ : student; college student


c. نَشِيْطٌ : diligent; active; hard-working

The antonym of نَشِيْطٌ is كَسْلاَنُ

كَسْلاَنُ means lazy.

e. ذَكِيٌّ : smart; clever

The antonym of ذَكِيٌّ is غَبِيٌّ

غَبِيٌّ means stupid.

2. يَسْتَيْقِظُ أَحْمَدُ مِنَ النَّوْمِ مُبَكِّرًا 


a. يَسْتَيْقِظُ  : wake up; get up

The base form of يَسْتَيْقِظُ is : اِستَيقَظَ - يَسْتَيْقِظُ

The maṣdar is : اسْتَيْقَاظًا

c. نَوْمٌ : sleep


d. مُبَكِّرًا : early

The antonym of مُبَكِّرًا is مُتَأَخِّرًا

مُتَأَخِّرًا means late



3. يَأْخُذُ أَحْمَدُ المِنْشَفَةَ وَالقَمِيْصَ وَالْبَنْطَلُوْنَ فِي الْخِزَانَةِ


a. يَأْخُذُ : take; grab

The base form of  يَأْخُذُ is : أَخَذَ - يَأْخُذُ

The maṣdar is : أَخْذًا


b. مِنْشَفَةٌ :  towel

4. ثُمَّ يَغْتَسِلُ بِسُرْعَةٍ فِي الْحَمَّامِ بِالمَاءِ وَالصَّابُوْنِ


a. ثُمَّ : then


b. يَغْتَسِلُ : have a bath; take a bath; shower

The base form of يَغْتَسِلُ is :  اِغْتَسَلَ - يَغْتَسِلُ

The maṣdar is : اغْتَسَالاً ; غُسْلاً


c. سُرْعَةٌ : fast; hurry; in a fast way; increase in speed

بِ + سُرْعَةٌ   becomes بِسُرْعَةٍ , the meaning is quickly; immediately; fast


d. فِي : in; at


e. حَمَّامٌ : bathroom; washroom; WC

Toilet  : مِرْحَاضٌ


f. مَاءٌ : water

بِ + المَاءُ becomes بِالمَاءِ , the meaning is by water; with water.


g. وَ : and

h. صَابُونٌ : soap



5. أَحْمَدُ مَسْرُورٌ جِدًا لِأَنَّهُ يَلْبَسُ قَمِيْصًا جَدِيْدًا الْيَوْمَ


a. مَسْرُورٌ : happy; glad

The antonym of  مَسْرُورٌ is : مَحْزُوْنٌ

مَحْزُوْنٌ means sad.


b. جِدًا : very; extremely


c. لِأَنَّ : because; as; due to

لِأَنَّ + هُوَ  becomes لِأَنَّهُ , the meaning is : because he ....


d. يَلْبَسُ : wear; get dressed

The base form of يَلْبَسُ  is : لَبِسَ - يَلْبَسُ

The masdar is : لُبْسًا


e. قَمِيْصٌ : shirt


f. جَدِيْدٌ : new

The antonym of  جَدِيْدٌ is قَدِيمٌ

قَدِيمٌ means old


g. الْيَوْمَ : today; nowadays



6. بَعْدَ ذَلِكَ يَذْهَبُ مَعَ أَبِيهِ إِلَى الْجَامِعَةِ بِالسَّيَّارَةِ

The base form of يَذْهَبُ is : ذَهَبَ - يَذْهَبُ

أَبٌ  + هُوَ  becomes أَبِيهِ , the meaning is his father

Mother : أُمٌّ
