Short Story in Arabic & English : Go to The Market - سُوقُ الْمَدِيْنَةِ

Today, I will tell you a short story. The title is "City Market". The story tells you about one activity in a holiday.

A mother goes to the market to buy something, after spending an hour she returns to her home.

I tell you in Arabic first, then I translate the sentence, finally, I show you word by word translation int English.

By reading this short story in Arabic and English, I hope your Arabic vocabulary increases.

Here is the story in Arabic



سُوقُ الْمَدِيْنَةِ

هَذَا يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ

وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الإِجَازَةِ لِطُلاَّبِ الْمَدَارِسِ

تَذْهَبُ أُمِّيْ إِلَى السُّوْقِ لِتَشْتَرِيَ الرُّزَّ وَسُكَّرِ وَالْخُضَارِ وَغَيْرَهَا

تَصِلُ أُمِّيْ مُبَكِّرَةً

ثُمَّ تَدْخُلُ بِقَالَةً كَبِيْرَةً وَتَشْتَرِي مَا تُرِيْدُ

تَعُوْدُ أُمِّي إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ بَعْدَ أَنْ تَقْضِيَ سَاعَةً فِي سُوقِ الْمَدِيْنَةِ




Translation word by word



1. سُوقُ الْمَدِيْنَةِ means city market.


- سُوقٌ means market.

- مَدِيْنَةٌ means city.



2. هَذَا يَوْمُ السَّبْتِ means this is Saturday.


- هَذَا = this

- يَوْمٌ = day

- السَّبْتُ = Saturday



3. وَهُوَ يَوْمُ الإِجَازَةِ لِطُلاَّبِ الْمَدَارِسِ means and it is a holiday for students.



- وَ means and

- هُوَ = he (for human); it (for non-human)

- يَوْمٌ  = day

- إِجَازَةٌ  = holiday

- لِ = for

- طُلاَّبٌ   = students

طُلاَّبٌ is the plural form of طَالِبٌ . طَالِبٌ means student.

- مَدَارِسُ  means schools.

مَدَارِسُ is the plural form of مَدْرَسَةٌ . مَدْرَسَةٌ means school.



4. تَذْهَبُ أُمِّيْ إِلَى السُّوْقِ لِتَشْتَرِيَ الرُّزَّ وَسُكَّرِ وَالْخُضَارِ وَغَيْرَهَا  means my mother goes to the market to buy rice, sugar, vegetables, and so on.

-  ذَهَبَ - يَذْهَبُ  means to go.

تَذْهَبُ is a form for the subject  "she" (third-person female singular).


- أُمٌّ = mother.

أُمِّيْ  means my mother.


- إِلَى = to

- سُوقٌ = market

- لِ = for; to

- اِشْتَرَى - يَشْتَرِي  means buy.

تَشْتَرِي is a form for the subject "she" (third-person female singular).

- رُزٌّ = rice

- سُكَّرٌ = sugar

- خُضَارٌ = vegetables

- غَيْرٌ = another



5. تَصِلُ أُمِّيْ مُبَكِّرَةً means my mother arrives early.


- وَصَلَ - يَصِلُ means arrive.

تَصِلُ is a form for the subject "she" (third-person female singular).

- أُمِّيْ  = my mother

- مُبَكِّرٌ = early; coming early

At the above sentence, we used ة (ta marbuta) because مُبَكِّرٌ is adjective.

An adjective has an agreement with the noun.

Because the noun is female singular, so the adjective is in the form of female singular.

Therefore مُبَكِّرٌ becomes مُبَكِّرَةٌ .



6. ثُمَّ تَدْخُلُ بِقَالَةً كَبِيْرَةً وَتَشْتَرِي مَا تُرِيْدُ means then she goes into a big grocery store and buys what she wants.


- ثُمَّ = then

- دَخَلَ - يَدْخُلُ  means enter; go into

تَدْخُلُ is a verb form for the subject "she" (third-person female singular).

- بِقَالَةٌ = grocery store

- كَبِيْرٌ  = big

At the above sentence, كَبِيْرٌ becomes كَبِيْرَةٌ  because it has an agreement with بِقَالَةٌ.

بِقَالَةٌ كَبِيْرَةٌ = a big grocery store.

بِقَالَةٌ is a noun. It is described by adjective كَبِيْرَةٌ.

كَبِيْرَةٌ is adjective. It describes the noun (بِقَالَةٌ)

Noun and adjective have an agreement. Because the form of the noun is female singular, so the adjective form is female singular.

Therefore كَبِيْرٌ   becomes كَبِيْرَةٌ.


- اِشْتَرَى - يَشْتَرِي  means buy.

تَشْتَرِي  is a verb form for the subject "she" (third-person female singular).


- مَا = what

- أَرَادَ - يُرِيْدُ  means want.

- تُرِيْدُ  is a verb form for the subject "she" (third-person female singular).



7. تَعُوْدُ أُمِّي إِلَى الْمَنْزِلِ بَعْدَ أَنْ تَقْضِيَ سَاعَةً فِي سُوقِ الْمَدِيْنَةِ means my mother goes back to the house after spending an hour in the city market.


- عَادَ - يَعُوْدُ means go back to; return.

تَعُوْدُ  is a verb form for the subject "she" (third person female singular).

- أُمِّي = my mother

- إِلَى = to

- مَنْزِلٌ = house

- بَعْدَ = after

- قَضَى - يَقْضِي  = finish; complete; accomplish; spend

- سَاعَةٌ = moment; one hour; watch; hour

- فِي = at; in

- سُوقُ الْمَدِيْنَةِ = city market
