We will keep on learning about noun in Arabic.

In the previous lesson, we learned about two states of noun in Arabic, they are definite noun and indefinite noun.

Today, we will discuss about noun cases in Arabic.



Noun Cases (noun ending) In Arabic 


Below are the fundamental points you must know:


1. Noun cases in Arabic = التَّشْكِيْلُ (vowelization).


2. In Arabic, noun (  اِسْمٌ ) has different endings to show the function of noun in a sentence.


3. Case (change in the form of a noun that shows its relation to another word) in Arabic is called حَالَةٌ


4. There are three noun cases in Arabic, they are:


a. Nominative case, in Arabic we call it => حَالَةُ الرَّفَعِ  or  مَرْفُوْعٌ

b. Accusative case, in Arabic we call it =>  حَالَةُ النَّصَبِ  or  مَنْصُوْبٌ

c. Genitive case, in Arabic we call it =>  حَالَةُ الجَرِّ  or  مَجْرُوْرٌ 


5. Function of noun in a sentence based on noun endings (noun cases).

Noun in a sentence can be acted as subject, object, possessor of a things, etc.


Below are the case of noun according to it's function in a sentence.


a. Subject

Noun case for subject is nominative.


b. Object of a verb

Noun case for this function is accusative.


c. Possessor of a thing ; comes after a preposition/adverb

Noun case for this condition is genitive.



6. Example of noun endings for each cases

As you have already read in the previous lesson, nouns can inflect according to state, number, gender, and case.

Noun endings for above types of each cases are varies.

We will learn them step by step and one by one.

In this lesson, I will show you noun cases for singular and masculine noun.

You will find singular and feminine noun, dual, plural for both masculine and feminine noun, etc in the next lesson. In shaa Allah.


Examples of noun cases for masculine Singular noun 



مُسْلِمٌ   = a muslim.


a. Nominative ( مَرْفُوْعٌ )

Vowel sign ending is Dummah   (  ُ or  ٌ  )

It will become مُسْلِمٌ   (muslimun).


b. Accusative (  مَنْصُوْبٌ  )

Vowel sign ending is Fat-hah  (  َ  or   ً )

It will become    مُسْلِمًا  (musliman)


c. Genitive (  مَجْرُوْرٌ  )

Vowel sign ending is kasrah  (   ِ  or  ٍ  )

It will become   مُسْلِمٍ  (muslimin).
