Arabic Expression: Need | Understand The Grammar & Sentence Examples
The word "need" is frequently used in our daily conversation, therefore you must understand this word and practice making a sentence using this word in Arabic.
Before practicing, let's studying the basic grammar of this word.
The word "need" in Arabic
1. In English, need is verb, and it is a noun also.
2. Need (verb) in Arabic => اِحْتَاجَ - يَحْتَاجُ
اِحْتَاجَ means need, require
Sentence example:
اِحْتَاجَ زَيْدٌ إِلَى مَنْ يُسَاعِدُهُ = Zaid needed someone who help him.
The sentence is using the verb "اِحْتَاجَ".
The sentence which is using the verb like this is called جملة فعليّة (jumlah fi'liyyah) or verbal sentence.
Sentence structure:
- اِحْتَاجَ = need. It is fi'l madi (فعل الماضي)
- زَيْدٌ = Zaid. it is fa'il (فاعل)
- إِلَى = harf. This particle makes the verb اِحْتَاجَ becomes fi'l muta'addi (verb that needs object)
- مَنْ يُسَاعِدُهُ contains مَنْ and يُسَاعِدُهُ.
مَنْ in this sentence means someone, whereas يُسَاعِدُهُ means help him.
3. Need (noun) in Arabic => حَاجَةٌ
- حَاجَةٌ means need, requirement
- حَاجَةٌ is singular form, the plural form of حَاجَةٌ is حَاجَاتٌ or حَوَائِجُ
Sentence example:
زَيْدٌ بِحَاجَةٍ إِلَى مَنْ يُسَاعِدُهُ = Zaid needs someone to help him.
This sentence is using the noun "حَاجَةٌ "
The first part of the sentence is زَيْدٌ . زَيْدٌ is ism (noun).
The sentence which is using a noun in the first part of the sentence is called جملة اسميّة (jumlah ismiyyah) or nominal sentence.
Sentence structure:
- زَيْدٌ = Zaid. It is called mubtada'.
- بِحَاجَةٍ = need
- إِلَى = it is harf that is connecting the word "need" and the object "someone"
- مَنْ يُسَاعِدُهُ = someone who helps him

The meaning: Educating the children needs more patience.

- تَعْلِيمٌ = teaching, education, educating
- الْأَطْفَالُ = the children
- بِحَاجَةٍ إِلَى = need
- المَزِيدُ = extra
- الصَّبْرُ = patience
Sentence structure:
- تَعْلِيمُ الْأَطْفَالِ = teaching the children

The meaning: Indeed, he needs my help.

- هُ = he. => هُ is damir muttasil, pronoun that points to 3rd person, singular, and masculine.

- ي = my => ي damir that points to 1st person.
