Lesson 4 - Part 2: Prepositions (Min & Ilā)

Continuing our journey through Durusul Lughah Volume 1.

In our previous lesson, we introduced the concept of Harf Jar. Today, we will master two more essential prepositions:

مِنْ
إِلَى

The Rule of Prepositions

When a noun is preceded by a preposition, it changes to the Genitive Case. In Arabic grammar, this is called:

مَجْرُوْرٌ (Majrūr)

Example:

  • Standard: الْبَيْتُ (The House - Marfū' with Dummah)
  • With Harf Jar: مِنَ الْبَيْتِ (From the house - Majrūr with Kasrah)


Lesson Conversation

مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ Where are you from?
أَنَا مِنَ الْيَابَانِ I am from Japan.
أَيْنَ ذَهَبَ؟ Where did he go?
ذَهَبَ إِلَى الْمُدِيْرِ He went to the principal.
