Short Dialogue: Using Traffic & Road Transportation Vocabulary 

Scenario 1: Finding a Bus Station (Asking for Directions)

Context: A tourist is walking and asks a local resident for directions to the nearest bus station.

John (Tourist): عَفْوًا، أَيْنَ مَحَطَّةُ الْحَافِلَةِ؟ (‘Afwan, ayna mahaṭṭatu al-ḥāfilati?) Excuse me, where is the bus station?
Ahmad (Local): سِرْ فِي هَذَا الطَّرِيقِ، الْمَحَطَّةُ فِي الْجَنُوبِ. (Sir fī hāżā aṭ-ṭarīqi, al-mahaṭṭatu fī al-janūbi.) Go on this road, the station is in the south.
John (Tourist): أَيْنَ مَوْقِفُ سَيَّارَاتٍ؟ (Ayna mawqifu sayyārātin?) Where is a car park?
Ahmad (Local): فِي الشَّرْقِ. (Fī ash-syarqi.) In the east.
John (Tourist): شُكْرًا جَزِيلًا. (Syukran jazīlan.) Thank you very much.

Scenario 2: Traffic Police Stop

Context: A car driver is pulled over by a traffic policeman at a road checkpoint.

Traffic Police: قِفْ! (Qif!) Stop!
Zaid (Driver): السَّلَامُ عَلَيْكُمْ، يَا رَجُلَ الْمُرُورِ. (As-salāmu ‘alaykum, yā rajula al-murūri.) Peace be upon you, traffic policeman.
Traffic Police: وَعَلَيْكُمُ السَّلَامُ. رُخْصَةُ الْقِيَادَةِ، مِنْ فَضْلِكَ. (Wa ‘alaykumu as-salām. Rukhsatu al-qiyādati, min faḍlika.) And upon you be peace. Driving license, please.
Zaid (Driver): تَفَضَّلْ. (Tafaḍḍal.) Here you go (handing over the license).
Traffic Police: شُكْرًا. سِرْ! (Syukran. Sir!) Thank you. Go / Proceed!

Scenario 3: Driving Lesson

Context: A driving instructor is teaching his student how to respond to traffic lights.

Instructor: اُنْظُرْ، هَذِهِ إِشَارَةُ مُرُورٍ. (Unẓur, hāżihi isyāratu murūrin.) Look, this is a traffic light.
Samir (Student): الْإِشَارَةُ أَحْمَرُ. (Al-isyāratu aḥmaru.) The light is red.
Instructor: نَعَمْ، قِفِ السَّيَّارَةَ هُنَا. (Na‘am, qifi as-sayyārata hunā.) Yes, stop the car here.

(A few moments later)

Samir (Student): الْإِشَارَةُ أَصْفَرُ. (Al-isyāratu aṣfaru.) The light is yellow.
Instructor: اِسْتَعِدَّ... (Ista‘idda...) Get ready...
Samir (Student): وَالْآنَ، أَخْضَرُ. (Wa al-āna, akhḍaru.) And now, green.
Instructor: جَيِّدٌ. سِرْ! (Jayyid. Sir!) Good. Go!

Short Reading Comprehension

Reading 1: Vehicles on the Road

Vocabulary Focus: Road, Car, Bus, Truck, Bicycle, East/West Direction.

هَذَا طَرِيقٌ كَبِيرٌ. فِي الطَّرِيقِ سَيَّارَةٌ وَحَافِلَةٌ وَشَاحِنَةٌ. السَّيَّارَةُ سَرِيعَةٌ. الشَّاحِنَةُ فِي شَرْقِ الطَّرِيقِ. وَالْحَافِلَةُ فِي غَرْبِ الطَّرِيقِ. هُنَاكَ أَيْضًا دَرَّاجَةٌ. الدَّرَّاجَةُ فِي الطَّرِيقِ مَعَ السَّيَّارَةِ.

English Meaning: This is a big road. On the road, there is a car, a bus, and a truck. The car is fast. The truck is in the east of the road. And the bus is in the west of the road. There is also a bicycle. The bicycle is on the road with the car.


Reading 2: Finding a Parking Lot

Vocabulary Focus: Compass, North, South, Parking Lot, Station.

أَحْمَدُ فِي السَّيَّارَةِ. هُوَ يَنْظُرُ إِلَى الْبُوصَلَةِ. أَحْمَدُ يُرِيدُ مَوْقِفَ سَيَّارَاتٍ. مَوْقِفُ السَّيَّارَاتِ فِي الشَّمَالِ. السَّيَّارَةُ تَذْهَبُ إِلَى الشَّمَالِ. وَفِي الْجَنُوبِ، هُنَاكَ مَحَطَّةٌ كَبِيرَةٌ. الْآنَ، السَّيَّارَةُ فِي مَوْقِفِ السَّيَّارَاتِ.

English Meaning: Ahmad is in the car. He looks at the compass. Ahmad wants a car park. The car park is in the north. The car goes to the north. And in the south, there is a big station. Now, the car is in the car park.


Reading 3: Traffic Light Rules

Vocabulary Focus: Traffic Light, Police, Colors (Red, Yellow, Green), Commands (Stop, Get Ready, Go).

هَذِهِ إِشَارَةُ مُرُورٍ. فِي الْإِشَارَةِ أَحْمَرُ، وَأَصْفَرُ، وَأَخْضَرُ. الشَّاحِنَةُ فِي الطَّرِيقِ. رَجُلُ الْمُرُورِ يَقِفُ هُنَاكَ. الْإِشَارَةُ أَحْمَرُ. الشَّاحِنَةُ: قِفْ! ثُمَّ، الْإِشَارَةُ أَصْفَرُ: اِسْتَعِدَّ! الْآنَ الْإِشَارَةُ أَخْضَرُ. سِرْ يَا سَائِقُ!

English Meaning: This is a traffic light. In the light, there is red, yellow, and green. The truck is on the road. The traffic policeman stands there. The light is red. The truck: Stop! Then, the light is yellow: Get ready! Now the light is green. Go, driver!
