Where are you from in Arabic: Basic Arabic Conversation
Today, we are practicing short conversation especially when you meet a new person, and you ask him or her “Where are you from”.
Where are you from question and the answers in Arabic
Before explaining to you the sentence in Arabic, I will write the sentence for pronoun in 2nd person, singular, and masculine first, then we will practice with another pronoun.
— مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ يَا أَخِي؟ (min ayna anta yaa akhii?)
The meaning: Where are you from O my brother?
or for short ⇒ مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتَ؟ (min ayna anta?) = Where are you from?
If you want to ask the same question to another person, just replace أَنْتَ (anta) with another pronoun or the person's name.
Below the examples:
— مِنْ أَيْنَ أَنْتِ يَا أُخْتِي؟ (min ayna anti yaa ukhti?)
The meaning: Where are you from O my sister?
— مِنْ أَيْنَ أَحْمَدُ ؟ (min ayna Ahmad) = Where is Ahmad from?
— مِنْ أَيْنَ مَرْيَمُ ؟ (min ayna Maryam?) = Where is Maryam from?
— مِنْ أَيْنَ هُوَ؟ (min ayna huwa?) = Where is he from?
— مِنْ أَيْنَ هِيَ؟ (min ayna hiya?) = Where is she from?
— مِنْ أَيْنَ هُمْ؟ (min ayna hum?) = Where are they from?
هُمْ (hum) is pointing to 3rd person, masculine, plural.
— مِنْ أَيْنَ هُنَّ؟ (min ayna hunna?) = Where are they from?
هُنَّ (hunna) is pointing to 3rd person, feminine, plural.
The answers
— أَنَا مِنْ كَنَدَا (ana min kanadaa)
The meaning: I'm from Canada
The variation of answers
a. Replace the pronoun with another pronoun or a person's name
— نَحْنُ مِنْ كَنَدَا (nahnu min kanadaa) = We are from Canada.
— زَيْدٌ مِنْ كَنَدَا (zaid min kanadaa) = Zaid is from Canada.
— هُمَا مِنْ كَنَدَا (humaa min kanadaa) = Both of them are from Canada.
b. Replace the country with others.
— هِيَ مِنْ فَرَنْسَا (hiya min faransaa) = She is from France.
— هُوَ مِنَ الصِّيْنِ (huwa mina as-siini) = He is from China.
— أَنَا مِنَ الهِنْدِ (ana mina al-hindi) = I'm from India.
— وِلْيَامُ مِنْ أَمْرِيكَا (wilyaamu min amriikaa) = William is from America.
— عَائِشَة مِنْ إِنْدُونِيسِيَا (aisha min induuniisiyaa) = Aisha is from Indonesia.
— مُحَمَّدٌ مِنَ السُّعُوْدِيَّةِ (muhammadun min as-su'udiyyati) = Muhammad is from Saudi.
