 We're still learning lesson 3 of Durusul lughah book 2.


the word "but" "however" in Arabic



Today, we are focusing on the word "but" in Arabic.


"but" in Arabic is لَكِنَّ (lakinna).


لَكِنَّ  basic rules


1. لَكِنَّ is one of the sister of إِنَّ "inna" (مِنْ أَخَوَاتِ إِنَّ)


2. Because it's one of the sister إِنَّ , so it acts like إِنَّ 


Therefore :  الّتى تنصب الاسم, وترفع الخبر


لَكِنَّ makes ism (اسم) mansub (منصوب), and khabar marfu (مرفوع)


3. Example:


Zaid is hardworking, but Hamid is lazy.


زَيْدٌ مُجْتَهِدٌ وَلَكِنَّ حَامِدًا كَسْلاَنُ 


explanation:


- لَكِنَّ = harf / sister inna


- حَامِدًا = ism لَكِنَّ , mansub, the indication of it's nasb is fathah "a"


- كَسْلاَنُ = khabar لَكِنَّ , marfu, the indication of it's rafa is dammah "u"

7. Your house is very beautiful, but it's small.

مُحَمَّدٌ طَوِيْلٌ وَلَكِنَّ حَامِدًا قَصِيْرٌ

آمِنَةُ مُجْتَهِدَةٌ لَكِنَّ أُخْتَهُ كَسْلَى


3. This lesson is long, but it's easy.

هَذَا الدَّرْسُ طَوِيْلٌ لَكِنَّهُ سَهْلٌ


4. My car is old, but it's strong.

سَيَّارَتِى قَدِيْمَةٌ لَكِنَّهَا قَوِيّةٌ


5. My brother is married, however I am single.

أَخِيْ مُتَزَوِّجٌ لَكِنِّيْ عَزَبٌ


6. Ibrahim is poor, but his uncle is very rich.

إِبْرَاهِيمُ فَقِيْرٌ لَكِنَّ عَمَّهُ غَنِيٌّ جِدًّا


7. Your house is very beautiful, but it's small.

بَيْتُكَ جَمِيْلٌ جِدًّا لَكِنَّهُ صَغِيْرٌ
