Ordinal Number in Arabic - Durusul Lughah book 2 - lesson 3
After studying number 11 - 20 in Arabic, then we'll study the ordinal number.
العَدَدُ التَّرْتِيبِيُّ (Ordinal Number)
The basic rules of ordinal number in Arabic:
1. Ordinal number agrees with the ma'dud.
2. The pattern of ordinal number (2 -10) is فَاعِلٌ
Examples:
How do we say "the first lesson" in Arabic?
The first lesson in Arabic => الدَّرْسُ الأَوَّلُ
explanation:
- ma'dud (الدَّرْسُ) is masculine, so the ordinal number is in masculine form => الأَوَّلُ
How do we say "the fifth page" in Arabic?
"page" in Arabic is صَفْحَةٌ . It's feminine, because it ends with ة
Therefore the ordinal number is in feminine form => الخَامِسَةُ
Finally, the fifth page => الصَّفْحَةُ الخَامِسَةُ
Ordinal number (1 up to 10)
Below are the ordinal number that has masculine ma'dud.
1. first = أَوَّلٌ
2. second = ثَانٍ (with ال it becomes الثَّانِي
3. third = ثَالِثٌ
4. fourth = رَابِعٌ
5. fifth = خَامِسٌ
6. sixth = سَادِسٌ
7. seventh = سَابِعٌ
8. eighth = ثَامِنٌ
9. ninth = تَاسِعٌ
10. tenth = عَاشِرٌ
Below are the ordinal number that has feminine ma'dud.
1. first = أُولَى
2. second = ثَانِيَةٌ
3. third = ثَالِثَةٌ
4. fourth = رَابِعَةٌ
5. fifth = خَامِسَةٌ
6. sixth = سَادِسَةٌ
7. seventh = سَابِعَةٌ
8. eighth = ثَامِنَةٌ
9. ninth = تَاسِعَةٌ
10. tenth = عَاشِرَةٌ
